Alamo Heights Moving Checklist
Moving to Alamo Heights? Check your city utilities, Broadway-side collection days and bulky-item plan, then work through a practical pack-to-unpack checklist.

Start with your exact address, utility handoff and loading plan. Then sort what goes, what gets donated and what needs a separate disposal trip before moving day.

First, check which city serves your address

The incorporated City of Alamo Heights has its own municipal services. A home described as being in the Alamo Heights area still needs an address-level check. Start with the city's maps and residential resources and confirm the service address with the city or your property manager.

For properties inside the city limits, Alamo Heights supplies water and sewer service. Its utility application and billing page is the starting point for a new account or service termination. Ask who holds the account, when your responsibility begins and how to avoid a gap between occupants.

Two to three weeks out: make one address sheet

Keep the details your helpers will actually need in one note:

Walk the route from the likely unloading spot to the front door. Measure the largest furniture against the tightest doorway. If parking or use of a street or sidewalk is uncertain, ask the property manager and the relevant city office before the move. Get address-specific instructions rather than borrowing another building's rules.

Build cleanout around your side of Broadway

For city collection customers, Alamo Heights lists garbage pickup on Monday and Thursday east of Broadway, and Tuesday and Friday west of Broadway. Recycling is Wednesday. Containers should be out by 7 a.m. and brought back onto the property that day. Check the official solid-waste page and current holiday schedule before setting your cleanout date.

Put your last collection day before the move on the calendar. Leave space to reach the bins while packing, and make a plan for anything left after that pickup. If your apartment uses a shared collection area, ask management which service and instructions apply.

Give the old sofa a separate plan

The city's solid-waste department lists furniture, mattresses and several large appliances among items it does not pick up. An old sofa needs its own exit plan. Review the city's excluded-item list, then confirm a suitable donation, resale or disposal option before leaving anything outside.

Make three clearly marked groups: moving, leaving with an agreed recipient, and needing disposal. Give each non-moving item a destination and a deadline. Confirm whether a donation recipient accepts the item's condition and size before arranging transport. Keep paint, cleaning chemicals and other hazardous materials separate and check an appropriate disposal route.

One week out: pack for the rooms you are moving into

Label each container with its destination room, a short contents list and whether it opens on day one. Use the same room names on your floor-plan note so helpers know exactly where things go.

If using reusable crates and a dolly, check the equipment's instructions and the actual route. Plan a separate approach for stairs, thresholds and surfaces where wheels cannot roll smoothly.

Moving day: keep the next step clear

Before unloading, check that you can enter, turn on lights and use running water. Photograph the home's condition before furniture covers walls or floors, and report any concerns through the property contact's preferred process.

Use one staging spot that leaves doors and walking routes clear. Assign one person to direct items to rooms while others carry. Keep pets and children away from the loading path. Check the day's weather and protect belongings during outdoor transfers.

Unpack the bed, bathroom basics and a small kitchen kit first. Then empty containers room by room and keep reusable packing gear together for the return or storage arrangement you have actually confirmed.

Before you call the move done

Do one final walk through the old place: closets, cabinets, outdoor storage and every outlet. Record returned keys, keep any handoff confirmation and check that utility stop dates match your responsibilities. At the new address, confirm the next collection day and put the first-night essentials where you can find them. The rest can happen one room at a time.
