A garage can become a collection of forgotten boxes and unlabelled containers. A cleanout is a chance to check what you own, assess its condition, and decide where it belongs.
Here's a better project: rent a batch of crates for one weekend, run the whole garage through them, and give the cardboard graveyard its funeral.
Why crates work for the cleanout
A garage cleanout is really a sorting problem, and sorting needs uniform, sturdy, labeled containers — not a pile of random boxes in twelve sizes. Our crates are all the same size, have attached lids, and can organize the project. Follow the equipment manufacturer's handling instructions; do not assume a crate can be dragged across concrete without damage. Rent 20 crates ($169 for the first week) and you've got a sorting system, not a pile.
The four-station sort
Choose a suitable area with clear access, move items you can handle safely, and set up four crate stations:
- KEEP, garage: tools, car gear, sports equipment that actually gets used
- KEEP, inside: the stuff that migrated to the garage and belongs back in the house
- DONATE/SELL: the treadmill of good intentions, the duplicate tools, the "free" boxes of cables
- TRASH: items for disposal after checking the applicable disposal instructions; set paint, chemicals, batteries, and unidentified materials aside for appropriate guidance
Label each crate with our included moving labels. Be ruthless: if you haven't touched it since the last move, it doesn't get a spot in the new system. Our room-by-room guide has the same honest math for the whole house.
What survives a Houston garage
Garage conditions vary. Heat, moisture, or pests can damage stored belongings, so choose a location and container appropriate to each item. A hard-sided, lidded tote is not a guarantee of protection. Follow the belongings' care instructions and the storage equipment's limits.
The rental crates are your project containers: they hold suitable items during the sort, keep categories separated and labeled, then stack out of the way while you install the permanent system. When the garage is done, we pick them up. No empties to store, no cardboard to break down.
Stack it like you mean it
Group crates by category and follow the equipment manufacturer's loading and stacking instructions. Do not assume an arbitrary height is safe. Keep labels visible and doors, walkways, and exits clear. Set aside items to bring indoors or donate, and arrange their next step before they become part of the garage again.
The weekend math
One possible plan: schedule delivery before the sorting day, allow time to set up suitable storage, and arrange donation drop-off before pickup. Adjust the plan to your booked dates. Extra weeks run $30/week on the 20-crate package if the project sprawls.
