Houston moves can involve hot weather, changing forecasts, and building-specific elevator and access rules. Here's your week-by-week plan.
8 weeks out
- Lock your moving date. If you're renting crates, book now — check availability for your preferred date. Booking is paid in full, no deposit, and that reserves your crates and your delivery date.
- Start the purge. Houston closets accumulate. Donate, sell, or toss what you don't need — a smaller inventory may reduce packing work or let you choose a smaller package.
- If you're in an apartment or condo: ask management about move-day rules now. Many Houston high-rises and mid-rises require freight elevator reservations, sometimes weeks ahead, and some restrict moves to weekdays.
6 weeks out
- Measure. Will the couch fit through the new door? The stairwell? Measure the big pieces and both doorways. Discovering this on move day is a horror story.
- Collect records: medical, dental, vet, school. Request transfers.
- Start eating down the pantry and freezer. Ask your mover about perishables and other restricted items before packing.
4 weeks out
- Change of address: USPS, banks, insurance, voter registration, subscriptions. Check the current address-update requirements and deadlines with the relevant agencies.
- Transfer utilities: contact the providers serving each address and confirm the available connection and disconnection dates. Plan any needed overlap based on those arrangements.
- Line up help if you're not hiring movers: confirm friends now, not the week of.
2 weeks out
- Start packing non-essentials: books, decor, off-season clothes, the garage. Label every crate by room.
- Confirm your crate delivery. We'll text your delivery window — typically within 24 hours of booking, seven days a week.
- Hurricane season check (June–November): glance at the forecast. If a storm's brewing, talk to us early — (888) 615-2699 — and we'll work with you on timing.
1 week out
- Pack everything but the survival kit. One crate stays open: bedding, toiletries, medications, chargers, coffee maker, a change of clothes, important documents. Label it OPEN FIRST.
- Prepare the freezer according to the appliance manufacturer's moving and defrosting instructions.
- Confirm elevator reservations and share the freight elevator code/schedule with your help.
Moving day
- Plan crate loading: follow the crate and dolly manufacturers' load, handling, and stacking instructions, and arrange suitable restraint during transport.
- Do a final sweep: every closet, cabinet, attic corner, and the top of the fridge. The thing you forget is always in the last place you check.
- Photograph the empty place — every room. Your deposit will thank you.
- Leave crates staged at the door at the old place if pickup is same-day, or just leave them inside neatly — our pickup is doorstep, no need to haul them anywhere.
After the move
- Unpack by priority, not by room. OPEN FIRST crate, then kitchen and beds. Everything else can wait a day.
- Stage empties at your door on pickup day, following the manufacturer's stacking instructions and keeping doors and walkways clear. We'll grab them — that's the whole point of reusable.
- Update anything the address change missed, and enjoy the part where you never break down a single cardboard box.
Eight weeks sounds like a lot. It goes fast. Start with the crates — everything else gets easier once the containers are handled.
