The Liquor-Store Box Strategy: Why "Free" Costs More Than You Think
Used store boxes may suit a move, but collection time, varying sizes, and condition checks are worth considering alongside their price.

“The box hunt”: a three-stop collection route beside two black moving crates on a dolly.

Some produce and bottle boxes may be suitable for reuse in a move. Their construction, condition, and fit for your belongings matter; a divider or handhold does not by itself establish that a box is suitable for the load.

Now the costs, because "free" at the liquor store has fine print.

The timing game

Stores break down boxes on their schedule, not yours. Miss the window and the boxes are already baled and gone. Hit it right and you're competing with every other scavenger in the neighborhood. You may need more than one store visit to collect enough suitable boxes.

That's a Saturday morning spent driving a box route, with no guarantee of inventory at the end.

Sizing roulette

You get what they got. Even when some boxes match, the available selection may not cover everything you need. Then it's a menagerie: wine boxes, bottle dividers, odd produce boxes, each a different footprint. A mix of box sizes can make planning the truck load more involved. Moving charges and loading time depend on your mover and the details of the job.

The hygiene question

Said plainly, not preachily: produce and liquor boxes have held food and drink. Inspect used boxes for moisture, stains, odors, visible contamination, pests, or damage, and do not use boxes whose condition is unsuitable for your belongings.

The honest total

Add it up: multiple store runs (gas + time), inconsistent sizes (more load planning), and time spent checking condition and suitability. Avoid damaged containers and follow any available load and handling guidance.

The boxes were free. Getting them and checking them still takes time.

The alternative, priced

A 20-crate Geaux package is $169 for the first week: crates delivered to your door, uniform footprint, attached lids, 2 dollies and labels included, picked up when you're done. This avoids collecting your rental crates from multiple stores. Check every container's condition before packing, regardless of its source.

Free boxes aren't a scam — suitable used boxes can be a useful option. Consider the collection time as well as the purchase price. If you'd rather spend that Saturday doing literally anything else, read the real cost math, pick your package, or call or text (888) 615-2699.
