You arrive at the new place. It's 9 PM. The room is full of packed crates, your phone is at 4%, and you can't find the toilet paper. This is the moment the OPEN FIRST crate exists for.
Pack an OPEN FIRST kit last and open it first. Use this list as a starting point, adjusting it for your household and splitting it across containers when needed. Follow the manufacturer's load and handling instructions.
The bathroom kit
- Toilet paper (a full roll, not the sad last-quarter one)
- Hand soap and a hand towel
- Shower curtain, rings, and bath towels — because you will want a shower
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant
- Any daily medications and basic first aid
Bag the liquids. Movers' law says the shampoo opens itself in transit.
The bedroom kit
- Sheets and pillows for every bed you're sleeping in tonight
- A change of clothes and pajamas per person
- Phone chargers — plural, and the power strip
Making the bed is the single highest-leverage thing you can do on night one. A made bed turns a construction zone into a place you can sleep. Everything else can wait.
The kitchen kit
- The coffee maker and coffee (non-negotiable)
- Paper towels, dish soap, and a sponge
- One pan, one pot, and basic utensils
- Snacks and bottled water
- Pet food and bowls, if applicable
You're not cooking a real meal on night one. You're making coffee in the morning and not ordering takeout three times because you can't find a fork.
The tools and papers
- A basic toolkit: screwdriver, hammer, Allen keys, box cutter, tape measure
- Flashlight (new places have dark corners and unlabeled breakers)
- Important documents: lease or closing papers, IDs, the moving paperwork
- Trash bags — you'll generate trash immediately
What stays out of it
The OPEN FIRST crate is for survival, not valuables. Jewelry, small electronics, passports, and anything irreplaceable rides in your personal bag, not in a crate on a truck. And skip the perishables — nothing that needs a fridge. The crate is the first thing you open, but it's still traveling with the move.
How to pack it
This crate gets packed last, the morning of the move, after the other crates are closed. Label every side with the included labels — big letters, OPEN FIRST — so it's the last crate on the truck and the first one through the door.
Keep it with you if you can, not buried in the truck. If you're making multiple trips, it rides in your car.
The rest of the move gets easier once the containers are handled. Our packages run 10 to 100 crates in steps of 10 — delivery and pickup included, one dolly per 10 crates — starting at $143.15 for 10 crates for one week ($139 rental plus a $4.15 small-order fee), before applicable distance charges, tax, and optional supplies. See all ten packages, size up with our room-by-room guide, or call or text (888) 615-2699.
Pack. Move. Repeat. — and pack the toilet paper where you can find it.
