Free boxes can keep your cash costs low. Before choosing them, add any collection costs and supplies you actually need, then consider your time separately.
The hunt costs gas and Saturdays
Depending on your source, collecting free boxes may mean store visits or coordinating with someone who has recently moved.
Allow for collection time, any travel cost, and the possibility that suitable boxes will not be available. Check their condition before accepting them, even if you have already made the trip.
"Free" doesn't include tape
Free boxes may still need tape, a box cutter and a way to label them. Packing paper, towels or other suitable cushioning can be needed with either cardboard or crates. Price the supplies you do not already have, and include the same necessary protection on both sides of the comparison.
Check the condition of free boxes
Free boxes may have been used before. Inspect them for damage and suitability for your intended contents, and follow any available load and handling instructions.
A damaged or unsuitable container can create extra work or expose its contents to damage. Any replacement costs depend on what actually happens; this comparison does not assume a failure rate.
Check exchange options and availability
If you are considering U-Haul's "Take a Box, Leave a Box" exchange, contact your local location to confirm participation and availability. Other local reuse options may also be worth checking.
For any exchange, confirm collection arrangements and inspect the available sizes and condition. A free-box source may not have the full quantity or mix you need.
Do the actual math
A 20-crate Geaux package is $169 for the first week. The crates show up at your door. You pack using the attached lids and follow the manufacturer's load, handling, and stacking instructions. When you're done, we pick them up. Dollies and labels included.
Compare the actual cash costs: obtaining the free boxes, tape and any other supplies you need, versus the rental quote and supplies you need with crates. Cushioning and paper are not costs that automatically disappear with rental. Suitable free boxes can remain the cheaper option; delivery, scheduled pickup and less assembly may make the crate service worth its premium. Keep the value of your time separate.
