Start with the trip from the truck to your front door. Confirm the loading entrance, check the curb, and test the elevator route before you pack. A little planning here saves a lot of backtracking.
Get your building’s access plan in writing
Ask the property manager which entrance you should use and what must happen before move day. Building rules vary, so get answers for your address:
- Which moving hours are available?
- Does an elevator need to be reserved, and who sets up any required protection?
- Where can the truck load, and what are the vehicle height or size limits?
- Are there forms, insurance documents, deposits, or access instructions to arrange?
- Who can help if the loading door or elevator is unavailable?
Save the answers with your moving confirmation. Send the entrance pin and contact number to your movers. Include both your old and new buildings if each has an access window.

Check the curb on your actual block
Uptown’s trolley belongs in your route check. MATA lists stops at McKinney and Routh, McKinney and Maple, and along Cole Avenue. Use the M-Line stop guide to spot transit activity near your entrance. Our recommendation: walk the loading route and look for tracks, stops, crossing points, and people waiting to board before choosing a truck position.
Read every parking sign where you expect to stop. Dallas lists sidewalk obstruction, stopping against posted restrictions, and parking or standing within 15 feet of a fire hydrant among its common parking violations. Ask Dallas Parking Management about unresolved curb questions before move day.
Run one empty-dolly test
Here’s a practical access check you can use in an apartment, condo, or townhome. Walk it with an empty dolly if the property allows it.
- Start at the approved unloading point. Record the entrance name and take a photo you can send to the crew.
- Follow the entire path to your door. Note ramps, steps, thresholds, tight turns, and doors that need a key or fob.
- Measure the narrowest opening. Compare it with your dolly, largest furniture, and packed load. Check elevator dimensions and posted load limits separately.
- Time one round trip, including doors and elevator waits. Use that test to judge whether your planned access window needs adjusting.
- Agree on a staging spot with management. Keep shared paths and exits clear.
- Choose a backup. Ask whom to call and where the truck can legally wait if the entrance is busy.
Put those six answers in one note. Give everyone the same version.
Give helpers clear arrival directions
A helper bringing a backpack may have more options than the moving truck. Uptown Dallas Inc. lists the McKinney Avenue Trolley as free to ride, with a connection to DART at Cityplace/Uptown Station. Check current service before relying on it.
Be specific about the station exit. DART describes Cityplace/Uptown entrances on both sides of North Central Expressway. MATA directs trolley connections to the west entrance. Send the correct meeting pin so helpers reach the side you intend.
For someone arriving on foot from the Katy Trail, Friends of the Katy Trail identifies a ramp through Reverchon Park at 3505 Maple Avenue. Check the walking route from there to your building before suggesting it. Keep furniture and truck routing on the property-approved access plan.
Pack in batches that fit the route
Label each crate or box with its destination room and a short contents list. Put labels where they stay visible when items are grouped for the next trip. Keep each load comfortable to handle, follow equipment limits, and pack dense items in smaller quantities.
Set aside a first-night bag with chargers, toiletries, clean clothes, keys, and basic cleaning supplies. Keep documents and valuables with you. Bring furniture measurements to the access test, and arrange help for anything that needs disassembly or special handling. Clear a receiving spot inside each room before the first load arrives.
Finish the shared-space sweep
Before your access window ends, check the elevator, corridor, loading area, and parking space for anything left behind. Return temporary access items as instructed. Confirm where empty packing supplies can stay while you unpack, and put any rental return arrangements on your calendar once they’re agreed.
Then unpack what makes the place usable: bed, bathroom, a few kitchen basics. The rest can follow one room at a time.
