Moving off campus near UTSA? Check your campus commute, apartment handoff and roommate supplies, then follow a practical packing and first-week checklist.

Start with your campus, lease handoff and commute. Then sort shared supplies, pack by roommate and make the first night easy before the first class arrives.

Start with the campus you actually need

Put the campus for each class, lab or regular commitment in your moving note. UT San Antonio's off-campus housing resource covers options near the Main and Downtown academic campuses and the health campus. Start your housing search with those destinations, then test the trip from the specific apartment you are considering.

Write down the whole commute: walk to the stop or vehicle, travel time, parking or transfer, and walk to the building. If your week spans multiple campuses, check each journey. A listing's distance from one campus will not answer every trip.

For future packing options, see the Geaux Crates San Antonio interest page. Geaux Crates currently serves Houston and is planning a San Antonio expansion.

Use the housing search tool, then inspect the home

UT San Antonio partners with College Pads for its off-campus marketplace. The university says listed properties are not university housing or affiliated with the university, and a listing is not an endorsement. Use the official housing resource and its disclaimer as your starting point.

Before committing, inspect the actual unit when possible and confirm what you are renting. Ask which furniture and appliances are included, which utilities you arrange and how maintenance requests work. Save the answers with your lease documents.

For move-in, get the date, key pickup location, office hours and any required documents directly from property management. Your apartment's instructions should drive the moving schedule.

Check the shuttle before counting on it

The Runner connects Main Campus parking lots and selected nearby apartment complexes. Coverage depends on the property and route. UT San Antonio publishes an off-campus route list and links to live schedules; check your exact complex and the service times you will need.

Walk from your unit to the actual pickup point. Note what happens if class runs late or you miss the last useful departure. Save a backup trip that fits your budget and accessibility needs.

Plan moving-day transport separately from your class commute. Confirm a vehicle and loading arrangement suited to your belongings rather than assuming a campus shuttle can handle the move.

Two weeks out: give shared stuff one owner

Create one roommate list with four columns: item, who's bringing it, where it belongs and what still needs checking. A shared kitchen rarely needs three sets of everything.

If move-out and move-in dates do not line up, solve that gap now. Confirm where your belongings will stay and how you will access them.

One week out: pack for class, sleep and food

Set aside a bag that stays with you: ID, keys, lease contact details, medication, laptop, chargers, class essentials and a change of clothes. Put bedding and a towel in a clearly marked first-night container.

For everything else, label by person, room and contents. Split heavy books into smaller loads. Wrap fragile kitchen pieces, close containers without forcing them and keep liquids upright in suitable protective packaging. If using reusable crates, leave enough time to unpack within the rental arrangement you have confirmed.

Ask management about loading access, guest parking, gates, stairs and any elevator reservation process. Get answers for your building; nearby complexes can have different procedures.

Move-in day: document, unload, then settle in

Before unloading, check that the keys work and confirm which room is yours. Photograph the empty space and any existing damage. Complete the property's condition report using its stated process and deadline, and keep a copy.

Walk the carrying route before loading a dolly. Clear doors and walkways, check thresholds and use equipment appropriate for the surfaces and stairs. Stage containers by roommate so each person can unpack without sorting through everyone's things.

Make the bed, set up the bathroom and put one simple meal within reach. Test internet access while the relevant support contacts are still available. Save decorative unpacking for after the essentials work.

Before the first class: do a practice trip

Try your commute with the current schedule and find the building entrance you need. Charge your phone, save relevant route information and allow a buffer for the first day. Back at the apartment, confirm mail and package instructions, the waste collection location and how to reach maintenance. Keep your condition photos and move-in paperwork together. That small bit of setup makes the first week easier.
