Moving day ends. The truck leaves. And then you're staring at a small mountain of empty cardboard boxes, which raises a question nobody asks until they're ankle-deep in it: where does all of this actually go?
The curb is just the beginning
First, consider whether the boxes are suitable for reuse. For boxes you plan to recycle, check your local collection program's current preparation and acceptance rules. Flattening may be required, but putting boxes at the curb does not guarantee collection or recycling.
The next use of collected cardboard depends on its condition and the recycling system that handles it. Without information from that system, we cannot say what a particular moving box will become.
Consider reuse before disposal
Before the curb, there's the reuse ladder: offer the boxes to a friend who's moving, list them as free on Marketplace, stack them in the garage "just in case." Inspect each box before offering or reusing it. Its condition and suitability for the next load matter more than an assumed number of uses.
Moisture can affect cardboard. Keep boxes dry while storing them and assess their condition before reuse or collection.
Plan for what comes after unpacking
Cardboard packaging varies in construction and intended use. Some moving boxes may be suitable for reuse; others may be damaged or no longer appropriate for the load. Follow any handling guidance and inspect them before packing.
Alongside the purchase price, consider the time and space needed to store, pass along, or prepare boxes for an accepted disposal or recycling route after the move.
The alternative: containers with a return trip
Reusable moving crates flip the whole model. We deliver them to your door, you pack and move, and we pick them up when you're done. Returning the rental crates means you do not need to arrange storage or disposal for those crates.
The service is based on returning crates for reuse. That alone does not establish a specific environmental saving or the outcome for every crate at the end of its usable life.
Next move, skip the box mountain entirely. Our packages run from 10 crates ($139 first-week rental plus a $4.15 small-order fee, totaling $143.15) to 100 crates ($399 first-week rental), before applicable distance charges, tax, and optional supplies, with delivery and pickup included — see all ten on our packages page. Or call or text (888) 615-2699 and we'll size it for you.
Pack. Move. Repeat. — with a return plan for your rental crates.
