Most people unpack the way they packed: frantically, in no particular order, opening whatever crate is closest. Two weeks later they're still living out of boxes — sorry, crates — and eating dinner on the floor.

Use this 48-hour outline to unpack by priority, then adjust the pace to your household and move. Functional first, perfect later.

Hours 0–6: beds and bathrooms

Before anything else: assemble the beds and make them. Sheets, pillows, blankets — done. A made bed is the difference between "we live here now" and "we're camping in our own house."

Then the bathrooms: shower curtain up, towels out, toiletries unpacked, toilet paper where it belongs. You want a shower and a functioning bathroom before you touch another crate. This is also when you find out which bathroom has the good water pressure — valuable intelligence.

Hours 6–24: the kitchen, functional not finished

Day one is about a working kitchen, not a finished one. Unpack the daily-use zone: coffee maker, a few plates and cups, basic cookware, dish soap, trash bags. The serving platters and the fondue set can wait — they have waited this long already.

Put pantry goods away as you go and break down... nothing. That's the beauty of crates — there is nothing to break down. Keep the empties together as you finish them, following the manufacturer's stacking instructions and keeping doors and walkways clear.

Day 2: clothes and the living room

Clothes next — hanging clothes first, then drawers. Labels by room and owner can make this easier. Anything you haven't worn in a year gets a hard look before it earns drawer space in the new place.

Then the living room: couch positioned, TV connected, the essentials out. It doesn't need to be styled. It needs to be sittable.

What waits (guilt-free)

The garage. The storage closet. Decor. Bookshelves arranged just so. These are weekend projects, not move-in projects — and that's fine. The goal is to make daily life workable first, then finish the less urgent spaces at a pace that suits you.

The crate advantage on the way out

Here's where reusable crates quietly win again: as you unpack, collect the empty crates for return. Follow the manufacturer's stacking instructions and keep access routes clear. Stage them by the door on pickup day and we haul them away. No breakdown, no bundling, no second trip to the curb.

Need the crates a little longer while you finish? Extra weeks run $15 to $150 depending on package size. And if you're still in the planning phase, our Houston moving checklist covers the eight weeks before the truck arrives.

When you're ready: packages from 10 crates ($139 first-week rental plus a $4.15 small-order fee, totaling $143.15) to 100 ($399 first-week rental), before applicable distance charges, tax, and optional supplies. Delivery and pickup are included across our Houston service area. Call or text (888) 615-2699.

Pack. Move. Repeat. — beds first, everything else can wait.
