“Storage or moving?” with a black industrial crate on a dolly and a two-way Store, Move arrow.

This example considers 27-gallon storage totes at Costco, using $7–$12 each as an illustrative budget assumption, not a checked current shelf price. Check the current model, dimensions, and manufacturer's storage and handling instructions before choosing it.

Moving day is not storage day, though. And that's where the comparison gets interesting.

Where totes win

Price per unit. At an assumed $7–$12 each, thirty totes would cost $210–$360 before tax — and then you own them. Check the current product and store price before buying.

Storage after the move. Purchased totes may be useful for ongoing storage if they suit the contents and storage conditions. Follow the specific product's instructions.

Availability. Check the current product and stock at your chosen store before making a trip.

If you need storage containers after the move, that ongoing use belongs in the comparison.

What to check for moving day

Lid design and handling. Check how the particular container closes and what its manufacturer permits for transport and stacking. Geaux crates have attached lids, but that does not guarantee they cannot open or be damaged. Arrange suitable load restraint during transport.

Dimensions and compatibility. Containers bought at different times may differ in size or design. Check whether they are compatible before stacking, and follow the manufacturers' load and stacking instructions. Consistent sizes may help with planning; they do not establish a loading-time saving.

You own the aftermath. Thirty totes is a great moving fleet and a terrible thing to own afterward. They don't disappear. They live in your garage for years until the next move — or you buy them all over again next time, because storing 30 empty totes is its own problem.

Plan for collection and the empties. Include any collection or delivery costs, along with transport during your move. Retail delivery and return options vary. With purchased totes, plan how you will keep, reuse, or pass along the empties.

The crate version

A 30-crate Geaux package is $199 in first-week rental charges, before applicable distance charges, tax, optional supplies and extra rental time: 30 industrial crates with attached lids, 3 dollies, labels, delivery to your door, and pickup when you're done. Follow the equipment's handling instructions during the move. Afterward, the empty rental crates leave on our truck.

Compare the actual products, quantities, full costs, and whether you need containers after the move. Equal counts of totes and crates do not establish equal usable capacity.
