The drive is only part of it. Get the route from the vehicle to your door sorted before the first load arrives.
Start with your building, not a neighborhood shortcut.
East Austin is a useful starting point for a search. It is not one set of property instructions. Austin publishes separate neighborhood planning resources for places including East Cesar Chavez and Holly. Use your exact address when checking access, parking and collection arrangements.
Ask which entrance handles moves. A leasing-office entrance can be a different door from the place where a vehicle should stop. Write down the approved unloading location, the on-site contact and what happens if another move is using the space.
We're gathering requests for Geaux Crates' planned Austin service. While local availability is being finalized, this checklist works with whichever moving or packing arrangement you use.
Look at the curb before move day.
The city's paid-parking guide identifies metered streets in East Austin between I-35 and Chicon. It also links a map of active parking reservations for construction and special events. Check the block you intend to use and read the signs when you arrive.
Walk the carry path if you can. Look for steps, tight turns, uneven transitions and a door that needs someone to open it. Tell your moving crew about what you find. Don't assume a dolly can take every part of the route, and keep accessible paths, driveways and building exits open.
If a friend is helping, send a marked entrance photo with the property manager's instructions. “Meet me out front” can create three different meeting points.
Ask about a reserved loading arrangement early.
Austin provides a right-of-way permit process for temporary loading or unloading of non-construction materials. If your plan needs reserved public curb space, ask the city or your moving provider which approval applies. A paid meter and a property manager's permission do not, by themselves, answer every curb-use question.
Keep that separate from questions about a portable storage container. The city treats container placement case by case; a reusable hand-carried crate is not the same thing as a storage container left in the street.
Save the confirmed arrangement and contact details with your move notes. Leave enough time to change the plan if the intended space is unavailable.
Pack in the order you will carry.
Set up a clear staging area inside the apartment, with the property rules in mind. Pack items by their destination room rather than by whichever empty container is closest. Number the crates and keep a quick room list on your phone.
For the first trip, prioritize the things that let you keep working: water, basic cleaning supplies, a charger, bathroom essentials and any equipment your moving team needs. Keep valuables and important paperwork with you.
Before loading a full batch, test the carry path with one manageable container. Check the turn through the doorway and how you will handle stairs. Follow the equipment's instructions and keep loads within what you can safely lift. Then repeat the route, instead of discovering its tightest point halfway through the move.
Give the leftovers a real destination.
Ask your apartment team how move-out recycling and bulky items are handled. If your property receives Austin Resource Recovery curbside service, the city's My Schedule tool provides its address-specific collection calendar and on-demand options. For eligible multifamily addresses, the city says to search without the unit designator.
Don't assume the street outside a different building has your collection arrangement. Separate items you are keeping, donating, returning and disposing of before the final cleaning. Confirm a receiving organization's acceptance rules before dropping anything off.
Make your last-day note explicit: what leaves with you, what has a confirmed collection, and who checks that the space is clear.
Use this final access check.
- Correct unloading entrance shared with the driver
- Property permission and any city arrangements confirmed
- Elevator or stair plan checked with the building
- Carry path clear and manageable
- Room labels readable without opening containers
- Helper parking arranged separately from unloading
- Leftover items assigned a confirmed destination
- Rental-equipment return planned before everyone leaves
