Seasonal storage can become a jumble of holiday decorations, coats, and summer gear. During the swap, check containers and contents for damage or moisture instead of assuming last season's setup is still suitable.
Seasonal storage deserves a system. Here's ours.
The rotation, twice a year
Pick two weekends — one when the holidays end, one when the heat breaks — and treat the swap as a project, not a chore. Everything seasonal comes down at once: decor, lights, winter coats, space heaters, the Halloween tub. Everything going up gets inspected first. This is the only time all year you touch all of it, so make it count: broken lights get tossed, the coat nobody wore gets donated, the inflatable Santa with the slow leak gets a decision.
Sort during the swap
The swap is a sorting problem, and sorting problems want uniform containers. If you're doing the rotation around a move — or just want the project version — a short crate rental turns chaos into stations: HOLIDAY, WINTER GEAR, SUMMER GEAR, DONATE. Labeled crates grouped by category, with access routes kept clear. Follow the equipment manufacturer's loading and stacking instructions. Our packing guide covers the wrapping basics for the fragile stuff — choose protection and a storage location appropriate to the item.
Choose containers for the storage conditions
Garages and attics can expose belongings to heat, moisture, and pests. Choose storage containers and locations for the items you are keeping, following the items' and containers' care instructions. A lidded plastic tote is not a guarantee against moisture or pests. Rental crates can help with a short sorting project; choose suitable containers you own for longer-term storage.
Label like a future self
Write labels for the person you'll be in six months, who remembers nothing: "XMAS — tree ornaments, fragile," not "stuff." Date the label. When you pull the tub down next December and everything is exactly where the label says, you'll wonder why you ever did it differently.
Check before using the attic
Before storing anything in an attic, confirm that the space and access are suitable for storage and check the belongings' temperature and moisture requirements. Do not assume a pallet, shelf, or hard-sided container makes an unsuitable area safe. If you are unsure about access, support, or conditions, choose another storage location.
Make the move match
If your seasonal rotation coincides with an actual move, don't do it twice. Pack the seasonal gear straight into rental crates by category, move it once, and sort at the other end. Delivery and pickup are included in every package — the crates arrive, the seasons change addresses, the empties go back on the truck.

Pack. Move. Repeat. Then store it like you mean it.
